*MEDIA ADVISORY* Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association to Join Traffic Safety Officials for Safe Driving Press Conference Ahead of Thanksgiving Holiday

SMITHFIELD — The Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association will join a press conference tomorrow to discuss safe driving ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

WHEN:

Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 10 a.m.

WHERE:

Conaty Indoor Athletic Center at Bryant University, Smithfield

WHO:

  • Michael P. Lunney, Executive Director, Rhode Island Interscholastic League
  • Peter Alviti, Director, Rhode Island Department of Transportation
  • Darnell S. Weaver, Colonel, Rhode Island State Police
  • Sidney Wordell, Executive Director, Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association

WHAT:

RIPCA and law enforcement representatives will join the Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL), Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT), and representatives from Bryant University to place a special emphasis on observing the rules of the road and driving safely this Thanksgiving weekend.

RIIL has partnered with RIDOT on the “Traffic Safety is a Team Sport” initiative. This campaign supports RIDOT’s mission of achieving zero fatalities by focusing on the areas of occupant safety, distracted driving and impaired driving.

Thanksgiving weekend is a busy travel time, with millions of people visiting family and friends. In Rhode Island, the holiday weekend also includes the traditional high school football game on Thanksgiving Day.

More people on the roadways also leads to a potential for more vehicle crashes. In 2020, from the evening of Nov. 25 to the morning of Nov. 30, there were 333 passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes across the country, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Officials will be offering guidance on safe and responsible driving during the event, to help prevent crashes this weekend.
